Sustainability | Linwood
Here at Linwood, we are committed to protecting and enhancing the environment. Our exciting journey is only just beginning, but we’ve made great inroads. Read on to discover how we’re reimagining our business...
HEAD OFFICE & BEYOND
Solar power
In 2020 we worked with renewable energy company, Geo Green Power, to install solar panels in our head office. The system now produces 72,250 kWh of electricity every year – 70% of our total consumption – saving circa 32.5 tonnes of CO2 every year.
Brochures
Our marketing brochures are printed on paper that has been certified by the ‘FSC’ – the Forest Stewardship Council, an organisation that works to promote the practice of sustainable forestry worldwide. As a brand we decided on this paper, as the ‘FSC-Certified’ label defines a strict set of standards that paper products must meet to prove that they are truly environmentally and socially responsible.
Such paper is typically composed of virgin tree fibres rather than pre- or post-consumer recycled materials, and when the wood pulp used to make this paper is sourced from a well-managed forest, it can be just as eco-friendly as recycled paper.
Packaging
Sustainable packaging is a huge priority for us... all plastics used in our packaging are either recyclable or recycled.
OUR PARTNERS
Sourcing
We aim to source our products from the UK and Europe to reduce the impact of transport to the environment.
Each supplier is carefully chosen for the quality of their work, craftmanship and innovation. Each one must also be environmentally responsible and ensure that all workers have a healthy working environment.
To help us manage, assess and report on sustainable performance, we have also joined Sedex – a world-leading organisation that has helped more than 75,000 companies create a more socially and environmentally sustainable supply chain.
Wallpaper
Linwood’s luxury wallpapers are printed using inks by HP, which is recognised as one of the most sustainable companies in the world.
‘The inks are water-based, and they don’t contain any solvents; they are supplied in contained digital units, ensuring that nothing goes into the local water supply,’ explains Matt Fletcher, commercial manager of John Mark, the state-of-the-art Lancashire-based company that prints all of Linwood’s wallpapers, adding, ‘The non-woven wallcoverings are also sourced from reputable mills that use wood pulp from FSC certified sources.’
Another way that we are making a small but positive change to the impact we have on the planet is by working with Haines, a pioneering platform for the resale of discontinued textiles. Its mission is to help reduce waste in the interiors industry, one that we whole heartedly agree with.
We’re turning your feedback into good for the planet. We’re excited to be using Feefo – the world’s largest verified reviews provider – to fund tree-planting projects in return for the honest feedback you leave us.
Our subscription to Treefo means that every time you leave us a review, we help fund a tree-planting project. We wanted to be sure our sustainability commitments would have an authentic impact on the planet. That is why we’re happy that Feefo has partnered Ecologi | B Corp™ to ensure that each seed is nurtured into a full-grown tree. Like what you hear? Be sure to leave a review the next time you get your Feefo review invitation and give the planet a helping hand.
OUR FABRICS
Recycled yarns
Last year we launched our first eco velvet fabric collection – Omega III is now woven with recycled polyester in the pile, removing 10 large plastic bottles from the environment for every metre woven.
Verde. We have also introduced a new cotton collection, Verde, which is woven with 80 per cent recycled cotton – using offcuts from the fashion industry.
Lana is made from recycled wool; 70% of fabric by weight – and half of the man-made blending yarn is recycled as well – which means by weight, 85% of Lana is made from recycled yarns.
A new generation of recycled products is coming; we are committed to growing our sustainable fabric offering, saving water and energy.
Natural linen
We use linen in many collections as it is environmentally sustainable and responsible. Flax, the plant from which linen is made, is resilient and can grow in poor soil, using far less water in its consumption than cotton. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation flax uses 13 times less pesticides than potatoes.
Flax is also extremely versatile. Every part of the flax plant has traditionally been used to create a worthwhile product – nothing is wasted, and production is cost effective. A common by-product of flax is linseed oil, which is great for wood preservation.
Wool
We refer to Lana – and all our wool collections (Beachcomber, Faroe, Ollaberry-Roxburgh, Westray, Freya) – as naturally fire-retardant. This is the natural characteristic of wool, so we don’t add additional harmful chemicals to make the fabrics fire retardant for upholstery.
Chemical free
We actively seek to minimise all chemicals used in the production and finishing of our textiles. Alpha, Cosmos velvet, Tango velvet and Omega III velvet are all woven with FR Polyester to achieve FR performance without using a chemical back coat.
All our products are Reach compliant. Reach is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry.
Oeko-Tex textiles and fabrics are certified free of harmful chemicals and are safe for human use. To attain Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, the fabric needs to have been tested and certified to be free from harmful levels of more than 100 substances known to be harmful to human health. Linwood collections that meet Oeko-Tex 100 requirements are: Lundy, Leckford and Moleskin velvet.
Future aims...
Linwood is happy to have a foot in both the past and the future. Our fabrics and wallpapers don’t follow the whims of fashion; instead, they have a classic look that will ensure they are loved for years to come. That doesn’t mean that behind the scenes that we aren’t constantly innovating. Our technical team is always looking for new ways to create fabrics that feel good, are better for the environment, and are tailored to our modern lifestyles.
